Bills Must Be Paid Bugs & Fixes: Blur Bug, Coin Flip Odds & Demo Saves

Current bug status for Bills Must Be Paid: the low-graphics blur bug and its player-verified fix, the coin-flip odds debate (dev: it's physics 50/50), the antivirus false positive, and why demo saves don't transfer.

Last updated: 8/9/2026

Quick Answer: The game launched clean β€” no widespread crashes, no save wipes, no performance meltdowns β€” and no patch has shipped yet. Four things are worth knowing before you play. The game hangs on load for a cluster of players, and the developer's fix (delete the D3D12 folder) works on some machines and not others. UI screens render blurry on Low graphics; switch to Medium. Clicking New Game after finishing wipes everything instantly with no confirmation prompt, so use the bankrupt button instead. And the coin flip is a genuine physics 50/50 no matter how rigged it feels. Fixes for the launch crashes, the blur bug and the camera tilt are all promised in the next patch, plus save slots.

Version note: Still on the July 29, 2026 launch build β€” no patch has shipped. Last checked August 9, 2026. Assembled from launch-window Steam forum threads with developer replies, the developers' pre-release changelog and launch-week reviews, linked inline. We re-check daily during the launch window.

Game Won't Load or Crashes on Launch

The most serious open problem. Reports describe the game hanging on the loading screen, or crashing right after the Unity splash, or a loading window that flashes and closes. Specs in the threads include a Ryzen 7 laptop with a GTX 1650 and a Ryzen 5 desktop with an RX 6500 XT, so it isn't tied to one vendor. The developer can't reproduce it and has committed to a fix in the next patch.

Work through these in order.

  1. Reboot the machine. Two reports had the hang clear on its own after a restart. Ten seconds well spent.
  2. Delete the D3D12 folder. Right-click the game in Steam β†’ Manage β†’ Browse local files, delete the folder named D3D12, and restart the game. This is the developer's own workaround, and the original reporter came straight back with "YES! Worked perfectly! Thank you!" It also fixed the Spanish-language flash-and-close case. It is not universal β€” two later reporters say it did nothing for them.
  3. On Windows 11, check Smart App Control. A player proposed it as the blocker and the developer acknowledged the connection within hours, promising to address it. The evidence is still messy: one player fixed the hang by turning off a Windows Defender-related setting, the player who proposed the theory later loaded fine without changing anything, and another runs the game normally with Smart App Control enabled. Not proven, but it's the next place to look when step 2 fails.
  4. Force DirectX 11. Right-click the game in Steam β†’ Properties β†’ Launch Options β†’ add -force-d3d11. This was the developer's fix for an identical-looking crash during the demo period in April 2026, player-verified then against a possibly different crash. Treat it as a lead.
  5. On Steam Deck, step through Proton versions. One Deck player fixed the hang by switching from Proton Experimental to Proton 9 (Properties β†’ Compatibility), and the developer now suggests the same thing. Don't assume Deck is broken generally: another player reports an LCD Deck working by default, and a Linux desktop player runs it fine on Proton Experimental.

"Failed to load il2cpp" fatal error belongs to the same family β€” two independent reports, and the developer's prescription is the same D3D12 folder deletion, with "we're giving our best to fix this in the next patch."

Two of those reporters are now unstuck without a patch, and neither can say what fixed it. In the il2cpp thread, the player who proposed the Smart App Control theory came back with "I changed nothing, but now it works?", and on August 9 the original poster closed his own report with "It did got fixed, thanks" β€” with no patch having shipped in between. That is a second self-healing case in the same thread, which is why step 1 is a reboot and why "wait a day and try again" belongs on this list at all. It is not a fix you can perform on demand.

Whatever your variant, post your specs in the thread. This developer reads them and works from them.

Blurry Bill and Collection Screens

Symptom: the bill page, the Collections view and the end-of-session settlement screen render noticeably blurry. One reporter notes the demo renders fine on identical settings.

Try this first: open settings and switch the graphics preset from Low to Medium or higher. The blur clears immediately for the common case. The original reporter found it, a second player confirmed, and one August 1 reporter summed it up: "it's fine on Medium/High so I just switched."

If that doesn't take, nothing else currently does. Six players are affected, including one MacBook Air M1 case with bill amounts unreadable on Low. Some of them see the blur regardless of graphics settings. The developer answered within hours on day one asking for specs and confirming "there is an issue we're currently investigating," then went quiet until August 4, when they committed in the macOS thread: "Thanks for sharing we're looking into this and will fix this in the next patch."

Until it ships, try Medium, and if it fails, drop your specs in that thread.

"New Game" Wipes Everything β€” Use the Bankrupt Button

Not a code bug, but the costliest trap on the forum. A player who'd finished the game clicked New Game intending to start fresh, and it erased all progress, prestige rings included, with no "are you sure" prompt. Three players had done it by August 2 ("i just did this and im honestly pissed"). The game has a single save slot and no in-game backup.

The developer's response: "sorry guys :S, save slots will be added soon." Nothing has shipped, and no confirmation prompt has been promised.

So: to keep buying prestige rings after beating the game, press the bankrupt button in the bottom-left corner of the screen. It loops you back through the prestige cycle where the ring shop lives, with your progress intact. If you're lending your PC to someone, copy the save file somewhere safe first β€” one player does exactly that.

The Coin Flip Is Not Rigged

The busiest complaint thread on the forum is about coin-flip losing streaks: runs like 2 wins in 10, 1 in 13, or 10+ losses in a row, alongside players posting even or winning records over similar samples. The developer's answer:

"it's 50/50 (physics) but seems like it does not feel or turn out to be fair enough... maybe we should 'rig it' in a 'players favour'... We will look into it and think about it."

So it's a physics simulation with genuine 50/50 odds, not a weighted table β€” and a player-favoured tilt is under consideration precisely because streaks feel terrible at 50/50. Nothing has shipped.

Three things to do with that:

  • Skip the gambling. A 100% completionist puts it flatly: "you can easily complete the game without it." The coinflip only matters for two achievements β€” do those with pocket-change stakes.
  • Don't count on the luck perk. The "100% luck next run" card does not protect coin flips. Developer-confirmed: "The luck is only affecting the loot of the piggies. More luck means higher probability of getting higher tier loot," with a promise to "make it more clear in a future patch." That's a wording fix, not an odds change.
  • Flip small if you're superstitious. One player tracking his bets claims stakes over ~$5k lose far more often than small ones and suspects the sim behaves differently under load. Unverified, and the developer hasn't addressed it.

Antivirus Blocking the Game

One launch-day report of Windows Defender blocking the game reached the developers: "Sorry to hear that β€” we'll look into this. We haven't had this issue previously."

This is the classic shape of a false positive on a freshly signed indie binary. Allow the game through your antivirus, then verify game files through Steam.

Demo Saves Don't Transfer

Developer-confirmed on launch day, twice: "The save from the demo will NOT transfer to the full game."

The reason is scope, not oversight. Per the pre-release changelog post, the full version rebalanced piggy HP against the new prestige layer, reworked the RNG and piggy spawner, added legacy points to the bill system, changed upgrade nodes and added the shop. A demo save doesn't describe a compatible game state. (The demo's integer-overflow bug β€” money capped at 2^63-1, then flipping negative β€” was also confirmed fixed for the full version.)

Supporter Pack Cosmetics You Can't Buy

If you've spotted supporter-pack cosmetics in the UI and can't find anything to purchase, nothing is missing from your install. The developer confirmed a cosmetics-only supporter pack DLC exists but "is still not live on Steam." The UI is simply ahead of the store page.

Reports We're Tracking

None of these have a fix or a second clean confirmation yet. Each gets a proper section if that changes.

  • The swaying desk triggers motion sickness. Two players reported it, and the developer answered the same day: "in the next patch we will disable the tilt/motion of the camera completely when you disable the motion effects in the settings." The existing motion-effects toggle doesn't currently stop the camera tilt. A third player has echoed the complaint.
  • Bomb piggy damage sometimes not registering β€” hits on the bomb-styled piggy occasionally produce no damage number, across different hammers. Possibly an intended cooldown. No forum thread yet.
  • Ignite visual oddity β€” the ignite skill's hammer flame doesn't always behave as expected. Vague and single-source.
  • Stutter and lag on capable hardware β€” two day-one reports (a Ryzen 1700 + 7900 XT forum post, and a refunded review calling the game "not smooth and laggy") against multiple reviews praising smooth performance. Both reports have confounds; no developer reply.
  • Save and achievement sync oddities across accounts β€” two reports pointing opposite ways: one player says a second Steam account on the same PC inherited their full save and achievements, another says the same account on two devices shows Steam Cloud synced while the saves differ. Mechanism unclear.

Reporting Bugs That Aren't Here

Use the Steam discussions. The two-person team's launch-window response rate is hours, not days, and they've already shipped guidance straight from player threads. Include your graphics preset and platform.
