How Many Dudes? Guide Hub - Tiers, Unlocks & Fixes
Guides for How Many Dudes?, the roguelike dudebuilder by Butterscotch Shenanigans: how the Tier and Gold Star unlock rules actually work (and what happened to the beta experiment that tried to change them), how long the game really takes, and fixes for the launch error and late-round frame drops.
How Many Dudes? is a roguelike dudebuilder from Butterscotch Shenanigans, the three-brother studio behind Crashlands. You recruit a team of five Dudes, stack Relics and Trinkets on them, and watch the whole thing auto-battle through escalating waves β the store page's ladder is "toddlers to wolves to gorillas to gods." The developers describe it as being "all about game-breaking synergies and simulated chaos," and that is the honest pitch: you are building a machine and then watching it run.
It sold well immediately. The developers reported 100,000 sales and a peak of 9,636 concurrent players within 50 hours, calling it their most successful launch ever. Reviews sit at Very Positive β 1,572 reviews, 90.9% positive as of August 5.
Version note: Written August 5, updated August 6, 2026, against v1.0.5-rc.12. Assembled from the developers' Steam announcements, the Steam achievement statistics, official screenshots and launch-window player reports, linked inline. The beta experiment on Tier unlocks was dropped on August 5, so the live rule is settled β see the Tier guide.

What You're Actually Buying
Two things about the shape of this game are worth knowing before you start, because both drive the negative reviews.
Tier 1 is easy on purpose, and a lot of people beat it on their first run. At least six launch reviewers report clearing 105 rounds first try, including one who beat the highest difficulty first attempt. The developers acknowledged this directly when they opened the beta experiment: "for some players, Tier 1 is just too dang easy, and so it feels like a tedious grind to get to the difficulty they'd like."
The long tail is unlock grind, not difficulty. Median playtime across 1,000 launch reviews is about 10 hours, and one player cleared all three Tiers in five. Getting every Dude unlocked for Tier 3 is the part that takes 30 to 35 hours, per a completionist's own count. Go in expecting a fast, funny 10-hour game with an optional grind attached, and the reviews complaining about repetition stop being surprising.

The Systems, Briefly
You are stacking modifiers onto Dude types, not individual units. That distinction runs through everything:
- Relics attach to a Dude Type and rewrite how it fights β the store page's examples are Wizard Dudes flinging fireballs when they move, Ninja Dudes entering stealth in danger, Finance Dudes generating cash from life insurance on your other Dudes. There are hundreds.
- Trinkets drop from Act Bosses and amplify an entire Dude Type on your team. The developers' framing: "Should you give your Wizard Dudes ADHD, or give your Samurai Dudes a Taser?"
- Wandering Dudes are the between-battle economy. Seven exist: Merchant, Dude Whisperer, Business, Scavenger, plus Food, Promoter and Smuggler added for launch. The Smuggler matters more than it sounds β it sells Relics from Dude Families that aren't on your Roster.
- Metaprogression buys starting cash, consumables, Pocket Dice, and Ensemble Mode slots, which let you pre-pick your team instead of taking random flyers.
Two of these are badly under-discussed by players, which is worth knowing if you're wondering what you're missing: across 1,000 reviews, Relics come up 51 times but Trinkets only 11, and Ensemble Mode β a headline launch feature β comes up twice.
Achievement Shape
All 69 achievements are public, and their unlock rates map the difficulty curve cleanly. Winning a boss battle sits at 95.8%. Beating the G.O.A.T. for a Tier 1 Gold Star is at 71.1%. The Tier 2 boss, the Killipede, drops to 9.6%. Winning the Tier 3 final battle sits at 1.5% β that is the real ceiling of this game.
The rarest achievements are four exact five-Dude team compositions, all at 0.1β0.2%: Cowboy/Alien/Samurai/Explorer/Wizard, Ninja/Wizard/Ranger/Electrician/Trooper, Psionic/Agent/Paladin/Spartan/Druid, and Alien/General/Lich/Time/Manager. Family-only runs are nearly as rare β the Warrior-only clear sits at 0.7%.
What We're Watching
This game is in an unusually active patch window β six hotfixes in the first week, and one design experiment that came and went.
- The beta Tier experiment β dropped. Opened August 3, revised August 4, and ended on August 5 after mixed-to-negative feedback: "we've decided to not make this change at this time." The live unlock rule is settled again β the story is in the Tier & Unlock Guide.
- A free content update is coming. The developers' August 5 "What's Next" post promises a sizeable free update with quality-of-life changes and new Dudes "within a couple of months." No date, no unlock-rule rework promised.
- Late-round performance. At least seven reviewers report frame drops from round 100 onward, including on high-end hardware. No developer statement so far. Tracked in Fixes & Performance.
