Tavern Legends Bugs & Fixes: Stuck Workers, Missing Bard & Patch Status

Current bug status for Tavern Legends 1.0: worker AI freezes and the developer's workarounds, the vanishing bard, performance drops, and what V1.0.2 through V1.0.9 already fixed.

Last updated: 8/5/2026

Quick Answer: Update first. Tavern Legends hit 1.0 on July 17, 2026, and its solo developer shipped eight patches in the first eleven days, which closed most of the launch window's headline problems.

Already fixed: the day-one inspection crash and frozen main characters (V1.0.3), two worker bugs plus an off switch for the Tavern Inspector (V1.0.4), full barrels emptying on the shank and worker serving priorities (V1.0.7), and shelves emptying and refusing restock (V1.0.9). Bank interest has paid out again since July 24, and the gold-price freeze reported alongside it closed as fixed on July 29.

Still open: the worker-AI freeze family, which has developer-suggested workarounds below; performance drops in full taverns, still the most common complaint in reviews; and two developer-confirmed items no patch notes have touched β€” the grill turning itself off and the shrunken water barrel, both fix-promised.

Version note: Current for V1.0.9 (July 28, 2026), last checked August 5. Sources are the official V1.0.2–V1.0.9 patch notes, CROWFORGE Games' Steam forum replies, and launch-week reviews and bug reports. Single-source reports are labeled below. We re-check daily during the launch window.

Saw the inspection crash or frozen characters on launch day? Update. Both are in V1.0.3's notes.

Balance and feature changes that will surprise you if you skip the notes:

  • V1.0.4 reworked worker movement speed to scale with skill and happiness instead of active-order count and dirt, raised serve speed at high skill, added the Tavern Inspector off switch, and added a watered-plant indicator. Details in the Workers Guide.
  • V1.0.5 let you shift reservation dates by one day at skill level 3, gave the holy sound effect its own volume option, and fixed Twitch integration settings. The king now burps back if you burp at him.
  • V1.0.6 rebalanced: a successful thief costs you 2 fame, the mushroom farm moved from level 6 to level 8, moon-juice puke and mature moon mushrooms glow blue, and NPCs can be set on fire every 10 seconds.
  • V1.0.7 put the butcher on the map, let you pick up chests with E, and made water barrels refillable with the water level more visible.
  • V1.0.8 split the menus tab into a second page for drinks and dinners with room for 10 of each, retiring the old four-dish squeeze, and put images in the tooltips tab.
  • V1.0.9 is the feature patch: workers switchable between taverns, an option to let multiple taverns operate at once (the notes warn it "could cause performance issues"), a casino bet limit, and more dirt on the floor from guests.

Workers Freeze or Stand Around (Open β€” Workarounds Available)

Symptom: an employee stands motionless behind the counter or gets stuck outside, doing nothing while orders pile up. This is the game's best-known bug family, with reports across launch week and Early Access.

Work through the developer's own workarounds in order:

  1. Reset them in the workers tab, one at a time, "so they don't get stuck inside each other."
  2. Toggle the "free" checkbox off and on. The worker re-registers the opening hours and goes back to work.
  3. Give them pathing space. Tight layouts around the bar and kitchen break AI routes, so leave walking gaps.
  4. Reset the mug shelf if they freeze on "going to the cabinet" while restocking mugs. Failing that, save and reload.

Status: actively being worked on. The "standing behind the counter the whole time" variant was fixed within hours of being reported. V1.0.4 fixed the endless water-barrel drop loop and workers not clearing empty mugs after closing, and reworked movement speed. V1.0.6 improved pathing so workers choose the nearest equipment by actual walking route, with multi-floor taverns called out specifically. V1.0.7 reworked serving priorities so servers no longer prepare drinks while an order is open. If your second-floor staff kept running downstairs or your servers stood at the prep station while tables waited, update and retest before rearranging furniture.

One related behavior is known but unsolved: idle cleaning staff wander randomly and can end up blocking the pouring station. The developer has no fix yet ("Maybe I find a suitable resolution"). Plan your layout around it rather than waiting.

If your workers are standing around but not frozen β€” they simply will not prepare drinks or cook β€” that is usually configuration. Check the task checkboxes and menu activation in the Workers Guide.

The Vanishing Bard (Fix Shipped in V1.0.6 β€” Verify)

Symptom: after a market run before opening, the booked bard is nowhere in the tavern, but the booking screen still lists him as active ("running").

V1.0.6 (July 23) targets exactly this. The notes fix the marketplace bard being unable to play all titles and add "a fallback to remove bards, who sometimes stuck anywhere." If bards still go missing after updating, file a fresh forum report.

If it recurs: close the tavern, save the game, and reload. The bard state resets. That save/reload cycle is the community's general-purpose fix for misbehaving NPCs.

Performance: FPS Drops in Busy Taverns (Open, Top Complaint)

Symptom: stutters and significant FPS drops when the tavern fills with NPCs, reported by reviewers on high-end hardware and the most frequent criticism across launch-week reviews ("this game shouldn't stress my CPU as much as CineBench does").

Status: no confirmed player-side fix. Optimization is the community's top ask for the post-1.0 roadmap. Two settings are worth testing meanwhile: lower the maximum number of active orders (fewer simultaneous orders means fewer active NPC tasks), and try the per-tavern lighting settings if you suspect lighting cost. Treat both as experiments, not fixes. A review complaint about heavy motion blur has no confirmed in-game toggle β€” if you find one in the options, trust the menu over this page.

Bank Interest: Fixed and Player-Confirmed (July 24)

Interest is credited daily at midnight, and through launch week it simply did not arrive. Deposits sat for days with no payout, and a July 21 adjustment did not help. On July 24 two players independently confirmed interest arriving again, and the developer closed the loop in the "Bank bugs?" thread: "Should be solved now!"

Update to the latest version and interest should pay out again. If yours still does not, post in that thread β€” the developer is watching it. The gold price freeze (stuck at the same value for in-game weeks) reported alongside the interest failure is closed as fixed too: the original reporter confirmed on July 29, and no fresh report has appeared since. Parking gold in the bank is back on the table β€” see the Money Guide for how it compares to the other passive income options.

Dev-Confirmed Issues Still Open (Fix Promised)

Two items the developer confirmed on July 20-21 have still not appeared in any patch notes through V1.0.9:

  • The grill turns itself off when NPCs use it, though the fireplace stays lit. The auto-shutoff was built for employee grilling and should not affect the player. Developer: "that was not planned … it will be fixed in the next update." Treat it as open until the notes or the forum say otherwise.
  • The water barrel shrank, a side effect of a building-size fix, and the developer says the next update restores its original size. V1.0.7 touched water barrels (refillable, water level more visible) but said nothing about the size, so this one stays open.

Shelves Randomly Emptying, Can't Restock (Fixed in V1.0.9)

Symptom: a shelf slot suddenly shows empty and will not accept a product assignment or restock. The reporter saw it roughly every other session, most often on the lowest tier of the mug shelf; replies added bread at the kitchen station and bowls to the affected list.

Status: fixed. V1.0.9 (July 28) listed "fixed issues with storages sometimes disappearing and becoming unusable," matching the symptom the developer had acknowledged the day before. Three days of forum silence followed a bug that used to hit every other session, which is strong evidence the fix took. The likely trigger was automated employee restocking, and the fix's wording is consistent with that.

The old workarounds, if it ever resurfaces:

  1. Replace the affected shelf β€” tear it down and rebuild it. This was the developer's own stopgap.
  2. Turn off the employees' restocking duty and refill shelves yourself. The player who suggested it never saw the bug again after disabling the option.

If it still hits you on V1.0.9 or later, post which shelf and what your employees were doing. The developer could not reproduce it and shipped the fix mostly on player descriptions.

Installer Error 0x80070643 (Official Fix: Run as Administrator)

Symptom: the game fails on first launch with a "ue prerequisites x64" error, code 0x80070643 β€” the Unreal Engine prerequisites installer bombing out before the game can start.

Fix: run the game as administrator. That resolves the prerequisites install, per the developer (July 26).

Single Reports We're Watching (Unconfirmed)

One forum report each. Noted so you know you are not alone, not yet patterns:

  • Crash when starting a new game, reported day one with no reply yet.
  • Cooking pot stuck on "Potatoes" β€” switching recipes to Stew does not take. Rebuilding the chimney and verifying files did not help. V1.0.4's notes include "fixed some issues with the stew," so update and retest.
  • The church monster can end up stuck idling in the village if you flee from it. V1.0.6 fixed the church demon not disappearing, so update and retest.
  • Missing NPC dialogue subtitles, which matters because dialogue hands out side quests.
  • Guests sitting on top of each other. The developer's reply points at a mechanism rather than a bug: closing the tavern and reopening after a short delay clears seat assignments even if someone is still sitting there. Worth knowing if you cycle the tavern open and closed quickly, especially with multiple taverns on different schedules.
  • The build menu lets you extend the first-floor terrace ceiling infinitely at the marketplace tavern, and place tables on it.
  • The reservation calendar breaks after the September β†’ October rollover β€” resolved, self-heals. The calendar showed September with 31 days and bookings landed on the wrong in-game day. The developer called this kind of calendar error rare and said it should sort itself out once the first week of in-game October passes, and the original reporter confirmed exactly that: by mid-October in-game, the calendar matched the day cycle again. If it hits you, don't restart anything β€” play through the first week of in-game October.
  • Casino door won't open after handing over the A38 entry card, and the developer's suggestion did not work. The player completed the card quest but the door stays closed; picking the "I have the entry card" dialogue line and walking through only loops the guard back to the carpenter-has-the-pass line. Try that dialogue line anyway, and if the door still will not open, add your save details to that thread β€” a developer is engaged and needs a second data point.

A forum report helps with any of these. The developer answers threads directly, often same-day. One note on the in-game reporting tool: a submission showing "failed" may have arrived anyway β€” the developer checked one such case and found the report had gone through ("seems to have been a timeout … depends on your current connection").

Not Bugs (Working as Intended)

  • The king's visits β€” the burping, the mug-defiling, all of it β€” are a feature with an achievement attached ("Kings-Cup: collect a mug full of the king's pee," 3.9% of players). Toggle his visits off in the chaos settings if he is too much. Knocking him out just turns the guards against you.
  • Weak passive income from taverns you're not standing in is explicit design intent: "the goal and idea is not supposed to be passive income from multiple taverns running in the background." See the Beginner Guide for the early-economy advice.
  • Moon mushrooms showing 0% growth on day one. They grow in 20% steps over 5 days, so the first tick appears after a full day.
  • "I can't fill stew orders" β€” the bowl has to physically touch the stew pot to fill. Two related facts from the same exchange: each tavern supports one cooking pot, and a pot holds 5 servings.
  • Only one tavern can operate at a time β€” outdated as of V1.0.9, which added an option to let multiple taverns operate simultaneously (with a performance warning) and made workers switchable between them. The design intent behind the old rule still stands: passive multi-tavern income is not the goal, and background simulation of inactive taverns is a technical non-starter, hence the performance caveat.
  • Pigs and chickens walking into your tavern are allowed by design.
  • The golden mug drops money β€” intended ("the golden mug should drop money β€” that [is] not [a] bug"). Its holy sound effect got a volume slider in V1.0.5.
  • A black wall blocks the gate next to the cheapest tavern. NPCs walk through it, you cannot, and it looks exactly like a bug. It is a locked part of the city: check the bank's construction projects and unlock the "Lower District," which removes the wall.
  • "I can only offer 4 dishes" means your menu is full. You can create any number of dishes as long as there is menu space, and V1.0.8 added a second menu page with room for 10 drinks and 10 dinners.
  • The Tavern Inspector has no off switch β€” outdated as of V1.0.4, which added a disable option. To keep him but dodge a bad rating, close the tavern just before his visit and reopen after.
